Frame Layer

Close shadow layer with blinds, windows, and abstract patterns.

The close shadow. Geometric patterns that simulate objects between the light source and the subject: venetian blinds, window mullions, or abstract noise. These tend to be harder-edged and more structured than the gobo layer.

The frame layer supports projective perspective - lines stay straight but converge toward a vanishing point, just like real shadows cast from a nearby window.

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
Enable FrameToggleOffTurns the frame layer on or off.
TypeChoice3 typesBlindsPattern shape. Each type has its own sub-controls.
ScaleFloat0.1 - 5.01.0Pattern zoom.
BlurFloat0% - 100%10%Edge softness. More blur simulates a more distant or diffuse light source.
Offset XFloat-2.0 - 2.00.0Horizontal position. For blinds, also tilts the slat angle slightly.
Offset YFloat-2.0 - 2.00.0Vertical position.
RotationFloat-180 - 1800Rotates the entire pattern. Also changes the drift direction.
DensityFloat0% - 100%50%Blinds: shadow vs gap ratio. Window: bar thickness. Abstract: threshold.
PerspectiveFloat-1.0 - 1.00.0Projective warp. Slats and bars converge toward a vanishing point. Negative values reverse the convergence direction.

Pattern Types

Blinds

Horizontal bars with adjustable slat count and width. The workhorse for interior shadow looks.

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
Slat CountInteger1 - 308Number of slats.
Slat WidthFloat0% - 100%50%How wide each slat is relative to the gap.

Window

Rectangular grid that simulates a window casting shadows through its mullions.

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
Bar CountInteger1 - 123Grid divisions per axis.
Window AspectFloat0.25 - 4.01.78Width-to-height ratio of the panes.

Abstract

Procedural noise pattern. Good for organic, non-geometric shadow shapes that don't reference a specific object.

ParameterTypeDefaultDescription
SeedInteger0 - 999942Random variation. Different seeds produce different patterns.

Tips

  • Perspective at 0.4 - 0.7 with Blinds gives that classic film noir shadow. Push it higher for more extreme convergence.
  • Layer Frame (Window) with Gobo (any tree texture) for the full "light through a window with trees outside" setup.
  • Abstract patterns work well at low Density (20 - 40%) for subtle, non-specific shadow texture.
  • Rotate Blinds 90 degrees for vertical bars.
