Scannar
Scannar lays a scan field across the image and lets brightness alter each line. It works for analog display texture or a line treatment that brings highlights forward. The field can stay steady for a graphic frame or drift across a cut.
Choose the scan character
Scan Style has three choices: Scanner, Carrier, and Waveform. Scanner is the default. Carrier is useful when the field itself should read clearly across the frame. Waveform gives the line a more oscillating character. Choose the style first, then set spacing and thickness before adding motion.
Control the field
| Control | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Line Spacing | Higher values give fewer, wider-spaced lines. Range: 4-512. |
| Line Thickness | Raises the base width of every line. Range: 0.5-80. |
| Line Angle | Rotates the field from -180 to 180. 0 is horizontal; 90 is vertical. |
| Base Frequency | Raises the oscillation along each line. Range: 0.001-0.08. |
| Drift | Moves phase over time from -10 to 10. Negative values reverse the movement. |
| Smoothing | Smooths response and line edges. It also steadies Carrier geometry. |
The brightness controls decide how much of the source drives the line work. Thickness Response raises the degree to which image brightness affects the line. Thickness From Luma raises the amount that bright regions expand line thickness. Threshold removes signal below a selected brightness. At 0, the full carrier remains; raise it to reserve the treatment for brighter parts of the image.
Try this: a rotating broadcast pass
-
Start with Scan Style: Scanner and a moderate Line Spacing.
-
Set Line Angle between horizontal and vertical, then animate it slowly over the shot.
-
Add a small Drift and raise Smoothing until the movement feels continuous.
-
Raise Threshold until the lines concentrate on faces, practical lights, or bright wardrobe details.
This gives a shot a scanning pass that responds to its own lighting instead of covering every pixel equally.
Try this: a graphic halftone reveal
Choose Scan Style: Carrier, lower Line Spacing for a denser field, and increase Line Thickness carefully. Raise Thickness From Luma so the brightest areas carry the heaviest marks. Hold Drift at 0 for a print-like frame, or keyframe it briefly at a cut for a small analog shift.
When the image turns into a solid band
Increase Line Spacing or lower Line Thickness. If bright areas merge, lower Thickness Response before lowering Threshold. When a diagonal field flickers too sharply, raise Smoothing and reduce Base Frequency. Those changes preserve the Scannar idea while giving the footage more room to read.
